Surgical Repair of Achalasia Cardia (Transthoracic Approach)

Surgical Repair of Achalasia Cardia (a rare neurodegenerative disorder of the esophagus in which the Lower Esophageal Sphincter or LES fails to fully relax) is done by myotomy, that is, cutting LES muscle fibers to weaken it. In the transthoracic approach, left thoracotomy technique is performed. After the mobilization process of the inferior pulmonary ligament and the protection of vagus nerves, esophageal myotomy is initiated by the surgeon on the gastric fundus.
