Spinal Intramedullary tumours (like astrocytomas, ependymomas, and hemangioblastomas) are tumours that arise within the substance of the spinal cord itself. These tumours are usually treated by surgical excision. This surgical procedure aims at complete removal of the tumour while preserving as much neurological function as possible. In this surgery, tumours may be removed through complete en bloc resection. Preoperative embolization (blocking of the blood vessels feeding the tumour using a glue-like embolic agent) may be performed.
