Subtotal Thyroidectomy

Subtotal thyroidectomy is defined as the removal of most of the thyroid gland, sparing about 2gms from the posterior portion bilaterally. Sparing a portion bilaterally might minimize the risk of recurrent laryngeal nerve damage, hypothyroidism, and hypoparathyroidism. This procedure is a treatment modality for thyroid cancer, toxic thyroid nodule, multinodular goitre, and Graves’ disease.
