Separation of Labia Majora

Separation of the Labia Majora is a surgery done to treat labial fusion (sealing together of vaginal lips) usually in small girls. In this surgical procedure, generally the lips are pulled apart gently by hand or the surgeon may use a small, blunt probe to separate the labia. This surgery is usually carried out under general anesthesia, or local anesthetic may be used to numb the area since this procedure can be quite painful.
