Pharyngectomy & Reconstruction

Pharyngectomy is the removal of a portion of the throat in the treatment of cancers of nasopharynx, oropharynx or hypopharynx. Major resection surgery through reconstruction flaps is required for large tumours on the back wall of the throat. This surgery is followed by radiation treatment and chemotherapy. Reconstructive surgery is also performed to rebuild the throat after a pharyngectomy in order to help the patient swallow liquids or food after the operation.
