Percutaneous Trigeminal Rhizotomy

Percutaneous Trigeminal Rhizotomy or PSR refers to a minimally invasive procedure carried out for relieving pain caused due to glossopharyngeal neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia and cluster headache. Although medications for these disorders offer pain relief initially, later they may become ineffective and result in serious side effects. PSR employs a heating current for destroying some of the nerve fibres which carry pain signals to the brain which leads to a feeling of some numbness in the area instead of pain.
