The consistent and abnormal communication between the descending thoracic aorta and the pulmonary artery is called the patent ductus arteriosus. This defect may cause due to the defective closure of the fetal ductus. The standard treatment requires a surgical ligation (with or without division of the patent ductus) without cardiopulmonary bypass is performed through a left posterolateral thoracotomy.
