Lumbar puncture

Lumbar Puncture is a diagnostic or treatment procedure where a hollow needle is inserted into the space around the lower spinal column for withdrawing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or injecting the medicine. Under local anaesthesia, the hollow needle is inserted in the space in the lower back where CSF is located, and CSF begins to drip out of the needle, which is collected in a test tube. After this, if required, medicine is injected into the spinal canal, the needle is removed and the area bandaged.
