Lumbar Pressure Monitoring

Lumbar Pressure Monitoring is the monitoring of the pressure of the Cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) in the spinal cord. This is a diagnostic surgical procedure. In this procedure, a hollow needle is inserted (lumbar puncture) into the space around the lower spinal column and a manometer is used to measure the pressure of the CSF that is withdrawn. Alternatively, a lumbar catheter (a small flexible tube) is placed in the lumbar spine and connected to a measuring device to monitor pressure changes in CSF.
