Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease that occurs in premature babies. It causes abnormal blood vessels to grow in the retina that can lead to blindness. The treatment for this condition includes Laser treatment, Freezing treatment (cryotherapy), and Medication eye injections. In laser treatment, the surgeon uses a laser to burn away the edge of the retina, whereas in freezing treatment (cryotherapy), the surgeon uses a freezing cold instrument to destroy part of the retina. Both of these treatments target very specific parts of the retina in order to try and stop abnormal blood vessel growth.
