Laparotomy for Ectopic pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy is a type of pregnancy where the fertilised egg gets implanted outside the uterus. Laparotomy or open surgery using a larger incision in the lower abdomen is performed for removing the embryo, under general anesthesia. In cases of severe internal bleeding and failure of laparoscopic surgery to remove the embryo, this procedure is used. Depending upon the damage of the fallopian tubes, salpingectomy (removal) or salpingotomy (repair) of the affected tube/s is performed.
