Inferior vena cava (IVC) graphy

An IVC graphy is the process of looking inside the inferior vena cava using an x-ray examination with contrast fluid injected into the patient. Inferior vena cavography (IVC) is usually performed using an internal jugular or common femoral approach (right is preferable to the left in both instances). IVC graphy facilitates the placement of inferior vena cava filters that are placed to prevent significant pulmonary embolism (PE) that can arise from a deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
