Ileostomy Formation (Permanent/Temporary)

Ileostomy Formation is a surgery in which the ileum is brought through the abdominal wall for creating a stoma (artificial opening). It is permanent when the entire colon, rectum, and anus are removed or bypassed. Alternatively, a temporary ileostomy is performed for a damaged/inflamed rectum or colon only requiring some time to rest/heal from injury/surgery. After the rectum or colon heals, the opening in the abdominal wall is repaired and the ileum is reconnected so that stool passes normally into the colon.
