Balloon pulmonary valvotomy

Balloon pulmonary valvotomy tries to remedy the birth defect of an improper opening of the heart’s pulmonary valve. A thin tube with a balloon at the end is introduced into the body through the groin, which reaches the pulmonary valve. The inflation of the balloon expands the valve resulting in its opening. This results in unobstructed blood flow to the pulmonary artery. A mild sedative is given to induce numbness. The whole process lasts around 2 hours.
